Someone Else's Kingdom, BOOK II - Scene XCII
As the battered ship finally docked in the harbour it found a storm equal in measure to the one left at sea. Sandstorms and dust devils, daylight skies darkened by the mist, frenzied mobs, and blood on the market streets. Somewhere far off inland a knife plunged into the stomach of a Tunidan guard. "The world is ending, why hide things now?" pressed the assailant, as the other guard stepped back in shock. Shuddering as his dying compatriot slid to the floor. Yet still, he kept his lips tight.
As Liofia stepped off the ship an energised Brynnyfirdian came forward to meet her. "The rest have pushed onwards, to the palace, as you suggested. They told me to wait here for you. We found chaos when we arrived. Gales, crushing heat, unbreathable air. Violent criminals creeping through the dusky cover. The locals had hunkered down to escape the cutting sands, and at first were unable to help with our questions. Now, however, they, like us, clamour for escape. The growing hunger and terror causing panic. The idea of refuge beyond this hell, or of some secret oasis within the palace walls being too much a temptation. Everywhere is fighting and rebellion. But, with good fortune, the path may be clear. We think we know the way, and we now need to quickly head on to catch up."
As Goola and Julen followed Liofia down the steps they listened on open-mouthed. Not expecting the chaos here to eclipse the war and danger they'd left behind. Goola pulled her cloak over her face to shield it from the abrasive winds. As did Liofia, who instantly turned and started ushering people from the ship. The exodus of men, women and children finding little refuge in the hot desert sand. Julen gripped the handle of his sword as he readied himself for the journey, as if bracing to fight the storm itself.
There was little time to waste. As the winds circled a heavy rush of bluster rolled in from the sea, spraying mist against the arid dirt. The strangers in a foreign world were eager to keep moving. Heading to the desert's edge.
